Prevention efforts, especially those focused on young people, are vital in addressing this issue early and offering alternatives to harmful behaviors.
In response to this challenge, Klamath Basin Behavioral Health and Klamath County Public Health recently partnered to launch the first-ever youth art contest focused on substance use prevention. The contest gave students a platform to communicate messages of hope, resilience, and prevention.
This contest was open to students in grades 6-12, inviting them to share their ideas about substance use prevention through their original artwork. The goal was simple: to raise awareness about the dangers of substance use, educate others about its negative effects, and encourage healthy choices. Students were encouraged to reflect on the consequences of substance use and use their artistic talents to speak to others in a way that felt personal and impactful. The creative process gave youth an opportunity to influence their peers in a meaningful and lasting way.
To recognize their hard work, the contest featured two prize categories: Grades 6-8 and Grades 9-12. The top three winners in each category received: First Place: $500, Second Place: $250, and Third Place: $100. We received 25 submissions of original artwork representing multiple schools in the Klamath Basin.
Throughout the contest, we were amazed by the creativity and thoughtfulness of the submissions. From powerful visuals to moving messages, each piece of art provided a unique perspective on how we can reduce the harmful effects of substance use and help each other make better choices. This contest is part of a broader effort to create lasting change through education, outreach, and the uplifting of healthy lifestyles.
A huge thank you to all the students who entered the contest! Your creativity and commitment to spreading positive messages about substance use prevention are inspiring. We encourage everyone to keep creating, keep spreading awareness, and continue to make a difference.
