Alleyway Activation Project
Thank you for your interest in the alleyway activation project.
A partnership between Healthy Klamath and Virtuosa Society
The Project
This will be phase 3 of the alleyway activation project. We are excited to be partnering with the Virtuosa Society for the third iteration of a project that has made a big splash in the downtown corridor of Klamath County. For phase 3, artists will be asked to submit an application that will provide information about themselves and a mockup drawing. This mockup drawing will be your selection of 1 of the 6 women below. We encourage artists to be creative in how they reiterate the photos of each woman.
Phase 3 will be an homage to historical female figures of Klamath County, and bringing history out in the streets. Each woman has a story to tell, and we hope that your art will help accomplish that. Artists are invited to do their research on each woman and select the one that most resonates with them. If an artist is selected but that historical female has already been allocated you may be asked to select another one.

APPLICATION MATERIALS TO BE SUBMITTED
Please submit one (1) copy of the following materials:
• Letter of intent outlining any accomplishments as an artist, your interest in this project, and a narrative description of your proposed design. (Maximum of 2 pages)

All applications will be reviewed by a committee that is composed of community members, the building owners, the project manager, and other community partners.
Project Scope:
Applicants will be asked to paint the portraits on a 4x8 piece of plywood. Each painting will be installed in a frame made of Corten steel that will be mounted to the brick wall on the exterior of a downtown building. Artists will be responsible for purchasing materials and will be reimbursed at the end of the project. Each artist will be allowed up to $450 in reimbursable expenses. Artists will be paid $700 as a stipend for their time and effort. Artists will be paid upon delivery of the art. Artists will be required to paint 3 coats of marina varnish on the entire painting, including the sides.
Healthy Klamath will be responsible for the installation of each painting, but artists are responsible for delivery on or before October 24, 2024, by 5:00 pm. Artists who fail to deliver the final product by the deadline will forfeit their stipends.

“The Activist”
Marie Norris
(1920-1981) Marie Norris pursued a life of active service for her Klamath community. In addition to founding the Organization of Forgotten Americans in 1969 to address the effects of tribal termination, Norris served on the Klamath Tribal Executive Committee on Claims, the Klamath Indian Game Commission, the Civil Rights Committee for the state of Oregon, the Klamath County Juvenile Advisory Council, and the Committee of Oregon Rural Opportunities. Norris spoke frequently about Native American culture and was one of the last people able to speak the Klamath language. Oregon Governor Vic Atiyeh declared Norris as one of the most outstanding women in Oregon history. Marie G. Norris was born on January 15, 1920 in Modoc Point, Oregon; she died on August 16, 1981 in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
“THE PHILANTROPISTS”
NANCY WENDT, JEAN PINNIGER & JOAN BALIN STAUNTON
Philanthropists Nancy Wendt (1932-2024), Jean Pinniger & Joan Staunton together raised millions to help sustain and grow many of the community assets we all enjoy today, including the Ross Ragland Theater, Klamath Community College, The YMCA, Mike’s Field House, The Martha Anne Dow Center for Health Professions, the Sky Lakes Cancer Treatment Center, The United Way, and more.
Background of Project:
In 2022 and 2023 Healthy Klamath was able to install 8 beautiful pieces of art on the exterior wall of a building downtown thanks to the AARP 2022 Community Challenge grant. Due to the success of this initial project, we are excited to announce that in 2023 we plan to continue these beautification efforts!
The Alleyway Activation Project is designed to beautify our alleyways in the downtown corridor of Klamath Falls. Recruiting from our abundantly creative regional community, a selected artist’s work will be mounted to one of the historical buildings off the main street. This is an opportunity to be a part of the effort to make Klamath Falls a livelier and beautiful place.
